Tribal tiger design in black linework
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A tiger is shown mid-stride, with its head lowered at the bottom right and its tail curling up to the top. The body is filled with flowing, interlocking tribal-style patterns in solid black, while the face and claws have finer detail. The image is a clean black and white drawing on a plain white background.

Dhara had woven nothing but the same border for eleven days, because the black thread kept knotting itself into eyes. Her father's loom stood against the wall where the river damp came through, and each evening the weft ran in long interlocking curves, like water folding back on itself, until a shape showed at the bottom of the cloth. It had a lowered head and a wide, open mouth. It was not finished, and it was not hers.

On the twelfth night the shuttle stopped halfway across and would not move. She heard a breath behind her and turned to find the tiger standing on the packed earth floor, its shoulders still striped with the pattern she had made, its claws pale as bone. It did not roar. It looked at the loom and then at her. "You left the tail for last," it said, in the voice of the river. "Everyone does."
She wound the bobbin by lamplight while it watched, and every line she drew came loose from the cloth and climbed back onto its flank. The curves locked where they belonged. Near dawn the tail was all that remained, a coil of black threads trailing off the edge of the frame, and she could no longer tell where the weave ended and the animal began.
She bit through the last thread and it was gone, padding out through the door toward the water. In the morning the cloth hung on the line, plain and empty, and the fishermen swore that on the far bank, where the river bends, something striped walked the shallows with its tail held high, as if it had been finished at last.
