Two black bands and dotwork fade on forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms each carry a pair of solid black bands with a strip of bare skin between them, and below the lower band the ink breaks into a gradient of fine dots that fades out towards the wrist. The linework is absent, with the design built from solid fill and stippled shading in black ink. The photograph is taken in soft daylight against a colourful striped blanket, with the tattoos filling the centre of the frame.

On the proving racks hang two navy tea towels with a cream one between them, the stripes from the old school canteen tablecloths he bought by the crate. They mark which shelf is ready. He keeps a fine mesh sieve just for rye, and at the end of each batch he dusts the bench in a slope, thick by the sink and thinning towards the door, a grey scatter like frost on a car roof. I asked him once why he bothered when nobody sees the bench but us. He tapped the sieve against his palm and said the dough needs to know where the warm stops.

The next morning I did it my way, the slope too steep, a clump where the dust fell heavy. He didn't correct me. He wiped the bench with a damp cloth, did it again in the same slow fade, and stood back to let me watch the pattern settle.

By half past five the first van's headlights slid across the front glass, and the loaves were rising in their linen-lined baskets. I pressed a fingertip to the dust at the edge of the bench and felt how cool it was, how the grey thinned to nothing exactly where the warmth gave up.
