Two blue roosters and a pot on the back

Back · Mixed · Photo

Two stylised blue birds, one rooster and one hen, face each other across a black pot with stems rising from it. Small blue leaves sit at the base of each bird, and the figures have black outlines and black detailing on their tails and combs. The flat, folk-art look is set against the curve of the shoulder blade, with the colour ink dominating the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third morning the seed in the broken pot had gone green and leggy, and you were the only one in the house who thought it looked pitiful rather than lovely. Your aunt had sown it in wet sand for the feast of the dead youth, the way her mother did, and the women would carry the little garden down to the sea by dusk to be thrown in with the wreaths. Until then it had to be watered, shaded and kept from the hens, who came over the courtyard wall every noon with their combs up as though they had been sent for.

The rooster was the worse of the two. He stood on the rim of the pot as if it were a plinth, flexing his black-feathered tail at the fig tree, and when you shooed him he only turned his head sideways and regarded you with one round, offended eye. The hen went straight for the stalks, neat and quick, as though she knew which ones would be carried away to the water and wanted a taste before the sea got them. You chased them twice with a broom and once with a sandal. Each time they came back before the shadow had moved a finger's width along the wall.

On the last evening you carried the pot down the hill with the other women, and the sprouts swayed and shed their pale threads on the path. At the shore your aunt tipped the whole mess into the foam, wreaths and all, and you wanted to shout that it was not finished. Then you looked back up the slope. Two blue shapes stood at the gate, neck to neck, watching the sea take the garden, and you understood that they had been the only creatures in the village who had ever bothered to come and look at it.
