Elsa and Anna nesting dolls on forearms

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on forearms. The left shows Elsa with a platinum braid, blue snowflakes and a teal and purple doll body, and the right shows Anna with a red braid, purple flowers and a blue doll body with a red base. Both use bold black outlines, flat fills and soft blush shading, with the dolls framed against bare skin.

Nobody on Halden Ring carves by hand any more, which is why the commission came to you. The order is two matryoshka, the kind that open into smaller dolls until the innermost is the size of a barley grain. The client wants the sisters from the old film reel, the one who makes winter and the one with the red plait who never stops moving. Your lathe is older than the hab wall it bolts to, and it still sings the same low note when you start it.

Mira comes down every evening after the lamps dim for the long night. She is the commissioner's daughter, and she corrects your brushwork as though you were an apprentice. Teal for the ice sister, she says, not green. Violet for the flowers, not purple. You let her have her way. You have made a hundred of these and you know their secret: each doll is only a box holding a smaller box, and the hard part is never the outside.

On the ninth night you finish the smallest figure, a sliver of pale birch no longer than a fingernail. You give her a braid in two strokes and a snowflake in six. Mira holds her under the lamp and laughs, and says that is the one that will get lost. You tell her the little ones always do. She asks you to put it back in the middle, so you nest the sisters one inside the other, the flowers out and the ice turned in, until the seam disappears and the whole thing looks like a single doll that was never opened.

Mira tucks the set into her coat and asks what she owes you. Nothing yet, you tell her. Open it when the lamps come up in spring, and tell me which one you found first. She climbs the ramp with her hand pressed flat against the pocket. You switch the lathe off, and in the silence you hear a faint click somewhere deep inside the wood, as if something small has settled into place.
