Matching owls on both feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Two mirrored owl tattoos sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, each owl perched on a thin branch with small pink flowers and scattered stars. The owls have purple bodies, large green eyes and dotted detailing, with soft shading and outlined edges. The feet fill the frame against a wooden floor, with the tattoos centred and the pink toenail polish visible at the bottom.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the windfalls, for the wasps are drunk on them this time of year. Now, you'll have heard of the two owls of Pennock Orchard. No? Then listen. There were two sisters who kept the bees there, and their mother had died in the August before, so the sisters had only each other and a branch of the old Bramley tree that leaned over the wall.

Every evening when the stars came out, one owl would fly to that branch and the other would follow, and they sat side by side, purple as plums in the dusk, with eyes green as the new apples. They counted the stars aloud, and whenever they lost count they started again, because nobody had told them that stars don't run out.
One night the younger sister climbed the ladder to fetch the last of the honey and forgot the lantern. The orchard went black. She called out and nothing answered but the branch creaking. Then two round lights blinked on above her, one and then the other, the same height, the same glow, and she followed them down the rows until her hands found the wall.
Her sister, when she got home, asked how she had found the way. The younger one only shrugged and said the owls had kept a count. Ever since, the pair have sat on the branch, one beside the other, and if you go out on a clear night and count the stars, you will lose your place every time. That is how you know they are still at it.
