Two cat face tattoos on the wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two cat face tattoos sit on the inner wrist and forearm of two arms, with a hand with red painted nails visible at the lower left. The cat on the left arm is shaded in soft grey tones with defined features and ears. The cat on the right arm is drawn with lighter, looser lines and patchy grey shading, and the two designs are placed side by side against pale skin.

The snow had shut the Weir Road by noon, and Dora Nettleton had three guests, a tin of sardines, and two cats that would not agree about the fire. The grey one, Mags, had claimed the settle by the bar since Tuesday. The other was a scrap of a thing with a torn ear and no name I would admit to, and she kept coming in off the yard with snow on her whiskers, sitting just beyond the reach of the poker.

Mr Corrie, the surveyor from Carlisle, wanted to know whether the cats were kept for rats or for company. I told him they were kept for weather. Mags had come to the inn the winter her father's farm sold up, and the scrap had come out from under the chapel steps in a frost that split the water butt. Neither had ever shared a room longer than it took to spit. Then the power failed at six, the lamps went with it, and the only light left was the coal glow and the stove's little eye.
By nine the scrap had crept under the settle. Mags did not move. She simply let the thin cat lie against her flank, as though she had been waiting all evening to be asked. Corrie watched them over his whisky and said nothing, which I took for manners.
In the morning the plough came up the Weir Road and the surveyor went with it, his papers in a waxed sleeve. I found the two cats asleep in one basket by the stove, one grey as the slates, one paler and looser at the edges. I left them there. The kettle wanted filling for one, and I filled it for two anyway.
