Two Hello Kitty tattoos on the lower legs

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon Hello Kitty characters are tattooed on the lower legs, one with a red bow and red dress and the other with a blue bow and teal dress. Both figures have solid black outlines and flat fills, with no shading. The background shows grey tarmac, and the bright pink heels with black lace trim draw attention in the lower half of the frame.

She left a postcard propped against the clock on the mantel, the old sort with a white cat on it, a red bow tied at one ear, grinning at nothing in particular. Beneath that, a second cat, smaller, drawn quickly in blue, wearing a teal dress, as if she had argued with herself about which one to send.

This morning I wrapped the shoes in tissue, slipped the postcard in with them, and walked the parcel down to the post office before the tide turned. The clerk asked if it was fragile. I said only the heels. He laughed, and I laughed too, though I was thinking about the shoes on the cold tiles of the hall, and how they had been made to walk somewhere far from here.

I went back up the hill and aired number four regardless. Nobody has booked it since. I left the window open a crack in case the cat wanted to come in.
