Two Hello Kitty ankle tattoos in red

Ankle · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon Hello Kitty figures are tattooed on the ankles of a person wearing jeans and black heeled shoes. The figure on the left wears a red devil costume with horns and holds a pitchfork, while the figure on the right has a red bow and dress and holds a small heart on a wand. Both are drawn with clean black outlines and filled mainly with red, against a plain skin tone and a wooden floor.

The twins had been arguing since the ferry, and by the time the coach reached the harbour town of Saltcombe Reach the dispute had reached its final, most ridiculous stage: which of them would be the devil. Mabel had claimed the horns first, a red pair fashioned from a bent coat hanger and a lot of bravado, and Dot had been forced to settle for the heart on a stick, which she said was a poor consolation for a girl with a proper temper.

They had come to Aunt Ruth's shop above the chandler's, where the bell over the door rang like a cracked saucepan, because Ruth had promised to draw them something that would last longer than their quarrels. She sat them on two wobbling stools, tapped her spectacles, and said she had only one ink left that was truly red, a tin of vermilion she kept for emergencies and funerals. The twins looked at each other and, for the first time that week, agreed on something.

Ruth worked slowly, humming a hymn tune under her breath and cursing softly whenever the stool creaked. When she finished, Mabel discovered that her devil had a tail with a neat little point, and Dot discovered that her bow was exactly the size she had wanted, so the matter of who was the devil quietly dissolved into the sort of victory nobody could actually win.

That evening, walking home along the sea wall with their shoes in their hands, they compared their ankles in the last of the light. Mabel poked her pitchfork at Dot's heart. Dot poked back. Neither of them, to their eternal and mutual annoyance, ever stopped being pleased.
