Hazel Pennock swore the cat was not hers, which was why it had been sleeping on her ledger for three weeks. It wore a pale blue bow tied neatly under one ear and sat on the till with its paws folded, like a bank manager waiting for an apology. The customers called it Duchess. Hazel called it trouble.

The trouble began with the heart-shaped shortbread. Every Tuesday she cut them from the same tin, and every Tuesday two went missing, always the ones with the lopsided edges. The cat was blamed, rightly, and carried out of the kitchen by the scruff. On the third Tuesday Hazel waited behind the flour sacks with a torch and a sense of grievance. At half past six the back door creaked, and the bow came through first, then the rest of the cat, carrying a biscuit as big as its head.

She followed it down the lane to the harbour wall, where a one-eyed herring gull was waiting with the air of a man who had been stood up. The cat set the shortbread down. The gull took the larger half, considered the smaller, and pushed it back with one webbed foot, which the cat seemed to find deeply fair.

Hazel went home without a word. The next Tuesday she cut an extra tray, lopsided hearts and all, and left it on the windowsill with a note that read Dinner for the Constable. The biscuits were gone by morning, and so was the cat, though its bow was back on the till by lunchtime, tied a little tighter than before.
