Two paw prints on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows two small paw print tattoos in solid black ink on the side of an ankle. Each print has a larger main pad and four toe pads, and the two prints are set at slightly different heights. The skin is pale and the background is dark, so the black ink stands out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the yard to the top of the gate by the time Jonah Pell found the tracks. They ran from the back step of the Ferrier Arms, past the woodpile and down towards the frozen beck, two prints at a time, one set a little higher than the other where the old lurcher had always favoured his left side.

Nobody at the inn had called him in. Mrs Ferrier had her hands full with the dining room, the coach passengers stranded by the drifts sitting by the fire with their boots steaming, and the lad who should have been minding the back door was asleep on the settle with a pie crust still in his fist. Jonah followed the marks with a lantern and a coil of rope over one shoulder, counting strides the way his father had taught him, because counting kept the cold from getting into his thinking.

He found the dog at the stile, sitting upright in the drift with his nose pointed at the lit kitchen window, as though he had only stopped to make sure someone was watching. Jonah knelt, let him sniff his glove, and looped the rope loosely across his chest. The prints ran on behind them in the lantern light, and for once he did not mind how much of his own weight he left in the snow.

Back at the inn, Mrs Ferrier looked up from the kitchen table, said nothing, and pushed the dog's bed nearer the range with her foot. Jonah stamped the snow from his boots and glanced back through the door. The trail was already filling, each print softening into a pale hollow, and by morning the yard would look as though nothing had ever walked across it.
