The dog was at the slipway again when the Morag Rose came round the breakwater, sitting square on the wet concrete with her tail sweeping the weed. Duncan Reid had given up telling her to go home. Every boat that left Portnaven before dawn came back past the same stone, and every boat found her there waiting, whatever the weather.

The winter the Morag Rose went missing off the Sgeir, the dog would not leave the slip. Mrs Reid fed her, the lads carried her up the hill twice, and twice she was back down before the kettle boiled. On the third morning the tide was out and the concrete was pale with frost. Her prints ran down the slope to the water's edge, stopped, then came back up in a neat left and right, and went down again.

Nobody could say how long she had been at it. Old Hector Gunn, who had little patience for daft things, paced the loop with his boot and said it was the shape the boat made when she turned in the eddy off the point, the same curve the Morag Rose had cut on every homecoming for thirty years. The dog was following her in the only way she knew, one foot to the sea and one foot to the shore.

When the boat finally limped in on the Thursday, one man short and the engine coughing, the dog was already on the slip. The prints were gone by noon, washed clean, but the men still walk round that stone slowly, in a figure of eight, and nobody has ever asked them to stop.
