Two pink flamingos on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two stylised flamingos stand side by side on a light skin background, their necks curving towards each other to form a heart shape at the top. The bodies and legs are rendered in simple flat tones with minimal shading, in a soft translucent pink and coral. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper arm against a blurred background, with a knitted pink and cream top in the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mudflat at Saltergate had been dry since the spring tide, and Mirela Quaid had spent three weeks waiting for the two flamingos to stop arguing. They had arrived in April, pink as cut melon, and taken the shallows beyond the sluice as though they had paid for them. The gulls kept their distance. The fishermen called them the Hallam pair, after the ferryman who had first counted them.

The trouble was the older male, who stalked the water with a bad leg and a grudge against the younger bird that had flown in from the estuary. Every morning he drove her off the best feeding ground with his wings half open. Every morning she came back, stood on one leg in the reeds, and waited, the way Mirela's late mother used to wait for the kettle to boil.

One grey afternoon the wind dropped and the lagoon went flat as a plate. Mirela sat on the sea wall with a flask and watched them meet at the water's edge. Neither bird moved for a long time. Then the young one bent her neck down, and the old one bent his to meet her, until the two curves rose together and touched at the top, a small heart of pale necks above the reflections.

Mirela poured her tea and forgot to drink it. When the tide came creeping back over the mud, the grudge went out with it, and the pair were wading side by side, legs lifting in step, dipping their bills into the same patch of water. She screwed the cup back onto the flask and left them to it, which was the most sensible thing she had done all month.
