Black line tattoo of three pine trees, a mountain and a sun above wavy water on an ankle, in a fine line style.

Pine trees and sun on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black linework tattoo shows three pine trees in front of a mountain peak, with a circle of sun behind them and wavy lines of water beneath. The lines are thin and even, and the design is filled with simple parallel hatching on the tree branches. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against pale skin, a rolled denim cuff and a striped fabric background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maren had counted the seedlings every morning since Bergen, three of them in tins of wet moss, and every morning they looked a little less like something worth carrying. On the fourth week the water turned the colour of pewter and the wind began to hum through the rigging, and the boy at the tiller asked her, not unkindly, what good a tree would do on a rock with no soil.

She did not answer him. The old woman who had given her the cuttings had said only that the island of Skarra had been bare since the sea took its forests, and that the sea would want paying at every mile. Maren did not understand until the third night, when a wave rose over the bow and put out the lantern, and in the dark the boy swore the water had spoken his mother's name.

She paid it what she had in her coat pocket: a silver thimble from her grandmother, dropped over the side while the boy wept and the lamp hissed out. The sea took it without complaint, and the wind dropped by morning.

They reached Skarra as the sun came up behind the peak, a grey hump of rock with one crease of snow. Maren carried the tins up the slope in the lee of a boulder, scraped three hollows with her hands and set each seedling in the cold ground facing the light. Down in the boat the boy held the rope and watched the dawn throw three slim shadows across the waves, and for a moment they looked like trees.
