Two swallows on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show a pair of small swallows tattooed on the outer ankle, one angled upward and the other descending. The birds are drawn with defined dark outlines and soft grey shading on their wings and bodies, giving them a slightly dimensional look against the skin. The wider shot shows the ankle above a black ballet flat on a grey pavement, while the close-up isolates the two birds.

The swallows came back to Harwick Row the same spring the cages stopped running, and my mother said that was no coincidence, only birds being birds. They nested in the rafters of the winding house, where the iron held the sun until noon and the coal dust settled grey on everything else. My father reckoned they had more sense than the men beneath them, because a swallow never once went down a shaft for wages.

I spent my afternoons on the cinder track below the headgear, counting. Two of them always went out together over the slag heap, one climbing hard into the wind while the other dropped low over the wet grass, then they swapped and swapped again, as if they could not agree who should lead. Dad watched from the gate with his cap pushed back. Each evening he came up the hill with his face scrubbed pink and his knuckles still black in the creases.

The night the lodge called the strike, he sat on the back step and did not wash at all. I brought him tea in the chipped cup with the blue rim, and he held it without drinking, looking up at the empty rafters. The headgear was for the scrapyard next, he said, and I did not understand him until the men with clipboards came in July and painted numbers on the iron.

That autumn I chalked two swallows on the brick wall beside the winding house, one rising, one diving, using the good white chalk from the school cupboard. Rain came before the week was out. The lower bird went first, running down the wall in grey streaks, and the upper one stayed a while longer, as if it had somewhere else to be.
