The post van still comes up the lane at eleven, though nobody in Cold Harbour Cross expects it to bring anything but seed catalogues now. I walked down to the gate this morning to wait for it anyway, the way you used to, and stood there with the dew soaking through my boots until the driver gave up and simply waved. The world is quiet here. You always said that as if it were a complaint, and I never once argued, because I have never known how to tell you it is also the best thing about the place.

The Bramley trees went over in the storm last month, two of them, root and all, and Mr Cahill has been sawing them into rounds for the fire. The orchard looks like a mouth with its teeth knocked out. I keep thinking about the summer we picked windfalls at dusk and you made me count the wasps aloud so we would know when to stop. Eleven, twelve, thirteen. You always lost count on purpose.

I found your old typewriter in the attic under the moth-eaten blanket, the black one with the sticking E. I have been typing out nonsense on the kitchen table, mostly lists of things to tell you. The E still sticks. I have decided to let it.

Come in September if you can. The apples will be ready and the quiet will still be here, waiting, though I think it has been missing you as much as I have.
