Vault Boy and vault door on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon character Vault Boy giving a thumbs up, standing over a bottle cap emblem. Behind him, a large stone vault door opens to reveal a bright light, with a small crowd of figures in period clothing gathered in the foreground. The bold black outlines and flat colour fills of the cartoon figure contrast with softer, shaded colour in the stonework and sky, and the design fills the lower leg.

Nobody in the village had seen daylight in the proper sense since the year the sky turned the colour of stewed tea.

Ambrose Tull had painted the grinning fellow on the wall beside the door, a man in a blue jumpsuit with one thumb raised, standing over a rusted bottle cap as if it were a trophy. Every child in the parish had been told he was a saint. Dora had always thought he looked like a man who had never once been down a hole in his life. Still, she found herself giving him a wink as the last of the mortar gave way.

Light came through the gap in a slab of white that made everyone squint and cry out. The cat went first, hissing, then a little girl with plaits, then the whole huddle stumbling up the path between the rocks towards a sky so blue it looked painted on. Dora stayed on the bottom step with her hand on the cold stone. Then she lifted her thumb, the way the fellow on the wall had done for three generations, and found the gesture was meant for herself.
