Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Vault Boy figure in a blue and yellow jumpsuit gives a thumbs up, set against a red circle with black horizontal bars. Right, pull up a chair, and mind the spilt pop on the floor, that's Bernie's, he never could hold a bottle. You want the night the siren went? Everyone in Ashby Vale says they were dancing when it happened, and most of them were, so I'll tell it straight. It was the Saturday of the Harvest Jive at the Regal, the band was on 'Moonlight Serenade' for the fourth time, and Mavis Tully had just lost a shoe under the stage. Then the lights dipped the way they did when the generator coughed, and out past the car park the sky went a colour I've no word for. Orange, then white, then a great grey mushroom standing up over the gasworks like it had somewhere important to be.

Nobody screamed. That's what I want you to know. Old Dougal Pike climbed onto the bandstand with his cardigan buttoned wrong and started waving us toward the cellar hatch like a man directing traffic on a bank holiday. He had a grin on him the whole time, and a thumb in the air, as if the bomb had come to fetch us for a sing-song. We went down laughing, every one of us, because that was the rule in those days: keep your chin up, and the rest will follow.

We stayed down there three days with the tinned peaches and a wind-up gramophone. Mavis found her shoe. Bernie proposed to a coat stand. When the hatch finally creaked open, the air tasted of pennies and the whole street was a blank page of ash. But the sun came up over the gasworks, bright as a new penny, and Dougal was still standing on the bandstand, thumb up, grinning at the morning as if he'd arranged it himself.
