Vault Boy bobblehead on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style Vault Boy figure from the Fallout games stands on a grey round base inscribed VAULT-TEC, with hands on hips. The character has yellow hair, a tan face and a blue jumpsuit with a yellow zip, and the figure is shaded with soft highlights and a light orange glow behind it. The tattoo fills the centre of a calf photographed from the side against a wooden floor.

Dear Mags,

The Bramleys are dropping faster than Dad can gather them, so I'm writing this on an upturned crate in the packing shed with a bruised Discovery in my lap. You'll laugh, but I found the bobblehead again. It was wedged behind the cider press, grey base chalked with dust, letters on the plinth half gone, still grinning as if it had been waiting since the summer we were twelve and bet Gran's sherry on who could last longest in the orchard without going home for tea.
You remember the rules we made up. Whoever's figure stood on the top shelf of the barn at the end of the month won the right to call the rows. We stacked crates for hours, and I lost because you'd hidden it behind the sprayer. Gran never once asked where it had gone. She just kept the ledger of windfalls in her neat hand and said the village boys were always chasing shiny things.
Dad wants to sell it. He says a collector in Leominster would pay forty quid for something that old, and maybe he's right, but I put it on the sill this morning instead, facing the rows where the light comes in orange through the dusty pane. Every time I look up from the sorting bins, there it is, hands on hips, yellow hair catching the sun, the same stubborn cheer it had at twelve. I think I'm going to leave it there until the last lorry has gone.
Come up at the weekend. Bring the sherry, and we'll see who can still outstare a cartoon.
Love, Jen
