Vault Boy thumbs up in a gear

Back · Colour · Photo

A cartoon figure with yellow hair and a blue and yellow jumpsuit grins and gives a thumbs up, set in front of a large dark grey cog. The bold black outlines and flat, smooth colour fills give it a clean, illustrative look. The figure is centred on the skin, with the cog framing it on all sides.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sand in your tea. Shift over, Tomas, you're not a stone. Now. Out past the second dry well, where the road bends like a dropped rope, there was a pump station with a cog bolted to its wall as big as a cartwheel. Painted on the cog was a lad with yellow hair and a blue suit, grinning like he'd heard a joke he'd already forgotten the end of. Somebody had scrawled WORKS under him in red. Nobody believed it. No water had come out of that pump in forty years.

Then came Ada Kessel, driving a flatbed full of rusted pipe, with a dog that would not stop barking at the wind. She got down, looked at the cog, looked at the grinning lad, and said to the empty road, 'Well, you're the only one out here who looks pleased about anything.' She put her hand up, thumb out, the way he did, and gave the pump housing a knock with her boot. Somewhere under the sand, something clicked.

The dust came up that evening like a wall of brass. Everybody in the station ran for the cellar except Ada, who stood by the cog with her thumb in the air and the dog pressed against her shins. The storm split around the pump like a river round a rock. Morning came grey and clean, and water ran from the spout in a bright thin line that nobody had the nerve to drink from until the dog did.

Now the paint's near gone, see. Only the thumb's left, and the grin is a rumour. But if you're thirsty on this road, you give that old cog a wave, and you'll find the well's still honest.
