Vintage tabby cat with banner on wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A colour tattoo of a tabby cat in a vintage illustration style, wearing a pink bow tie, sits above a black ribbon banner with the words CAT LADY in white capitals. The cat is shaded in browns and tans with fine detail on the fur and face, and the banner is solid black. The tattoo is centred on the inside of a wrist against a plain background, with a striped navy garment at the edge of the frame.

Late August, and the Pippin trees at Greave's Orchard were dropping their fruit faster than Nell could gather it. The tabby sat on the top rung of the stepladder as though he had been appointed foreman. His name was Mr Bartholomew, though everyone in Little Hadden called him the Admiral, and he had worn the same pink bow since the village show in June, when he took second place to a marrow.

Nell had no patience for the Pemberton brothers, who leaned over the lych gate every Sunday to ask whether she had found a husband yet or had simply given up and bought more cats. "Cat lady," Rupert said one morning, loud enough for the whole choir to hear. She let it pass. Then the Pemberton lorry came up the lane with crates of cider they meant to sell at the Saturday market under her name, and Nell set down her basket.
She marched down to the gate with the Admiral under one arm, bow askew, and held him up like a prize marrow. "If that's what you think a cat lady is," she said, "then you've been walking past the best orchard in the county with your eyes shut." The brothers looked at the cat, then at the apples, and said nothing at all. Behind her, the Admiral yawned.
That evening she painted the words on a slate board, black ribbon and white letters, and nailed it above the barn door. Underneath, in smaller hand, she added: Apples sold here. Cat not for sale. The Admiral sat on the step below it, bow straight again, watching the last light go gold across the trees.
