Vintage VW vans and beetles on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows four Volkswagen vehicles, two camper vans and two Beetles, arranged down the calf and linked by a thin curving road line. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading on the bodywork and windows. Colour is dominant, with green, yellow, orange, red and blue ink, and the vehicles are set at different angles to suggest movement down the leg.

Nobody in Tregarrow had ever seen the green bus go faster than a walking pace, so when Dessa Pryor heard its horn at six in the morning she assumed the lane had flooded again. Behind it came the orange Beetle, then the blue one with a cracked wing mirror, then the red camper that smelt of paraffin and wet dog. They came down the hill in a line like ducklings, rattled over the cattle grid, and stopped outside the chapel where the old men sat on the wall.

The one in front was Ansel Quick, who had driven that green van since the year the war ended and had never once been late for anything except his own wedding. He had a letter from a widow in Penzance asking him to bring her husband's Beetle home. Nobody in Tregarrow knew the husband had left it in Lamorna in 1971 with the keys in the ashtray. When the orange car finally rolled to a halt, its nose was tipped towards the sea, as if it had been listening for a very long time.

Dessa walked down with a flask of tea and found the widow's grandson already in the blue car, crying over the gearstick. 'It runs,' he said, astonished. 'It was only ever waiting on the road,' said Ansel, and he handed her a dented tin of boiled sweets as payment for the tea.

By noon they had all gone back up the lane, one after another, the red camper last. The road behind them had curled itself into a loop, so that anyone who followed it would arrive exactly where they had started. Dessa kept the flask. Some mornings, when the tide turns, she still hears a horn coming down the hill.
