The seal on the north airlock failed again on the ninth, and the mending crew came back grey around the mouth. I didn't tell them what I'd decided. You remember the painted line above the hatch that Father used to read aloud as if it were a joke? Walk by faith. Nobody on this ring has seen the outer ridge in forty years, only the sensor maps, which say it is airless and cold and full of nothing.

Yesterday I took the surface pass alone, in the thin suit with the slate of coordinates strapped to my wrist. Halfway across the grey plain the sky above the rim filled with small dark shapes. Three of them, then a dozen, turning like ash in a draft. The maps had no birds on them. I stood there with my glove raised and felt ridiculous, a grown woman waving at specks of rust-coloured dust.

They flew ahead of me, always just beyond the visor glass, and where they settled the ground gave a faint green sheen under my lamp. I followed them to the lip of a crater where old water had frozen into lace. I don't know what they eat or how they live out here, and I won't pretend I do. I only know I kept walking because they kept rising.
