Wanderlust, compass and arrow flash sheet

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil or ink flash sheet on paper showing several tattoo designs: the words Wanderlust and Explore in flowing script, a compass rose with a dotted star and petal-like outline, and three fine line arrows, two with feathers. The linework is clean and thin, with stippled dotwork shading on the compass and feather tips. The designs are arranged loosely across the page on a single black and grey sheet.

The sourdough had been proving since midnight, and Mrs Okafor's order was still chalked on the slate by the door: forty split tins, two seeded, one for the church hall. I was on my knees at the back oven, feeling for the draught with the flat of my hand, when Grandad's atlas slid off the top shelf and landed open on the flour bin, face up, in a cloud of dust.

It fell open at the Atlantic. Somebody, years ago, had pencilled a compass rose in the margin, the eight points fanned out like a flower, and beside it my grandad had written in his slanting capitals: GO WEST, SHE SAID, AND KEEP THE STAR ON YOUR LEFT. He never went anywhere. He stayed in Hastings and sold fish, and when he died the atlas came to me with a bent spine and a bus ticket tucked at a page for a route that no longer runs.

I put the ticket in my apron pocket and took the first tray out. The crust had blistered gold at the edges, and the smell of it filled the cold kitchen the way the sea fills a harbour at the turn of the tide. I thought about the wide roads printed on that map, the feathers Grandad kept in a jam jar on the windowsill, and the way he used to point at the sky and say the arrows were already there, you only had to follow them.

Dawn was grey at the window. I lifted the loaf onto the sill, scored it once across the top with a clean slash, and watched the light come up over the car park, pale and steady, just where the compass said it would.
