Wanderlust globe and aeroplane on a limb
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A traditional style globe sits on a gold stand, with a red banner reading WANDERLUST across its centre and a small aeroplane and a loop of red trailing line below. Bold black outlines and flat areas of blue, brown and yellow fill the design, with cropped flower tattoos visible at the edges. The two panels show the same tattoo from slightly different angles on pale skin against a light background.

Dear Tamsin, the globe is still on the windowsill of the Shannon hangar, its brass stand gone green at the joints, though nobody has spun it since the last charter lifted off in spring. I found it under a tarpaulin this morning with the red thread still knotted to its base, the one you tied round the Cape of Good Hope when you were six and insisted the ocean was the wrong shade.

The little aeroplane is ready. Mr Okafor from the salvage yard offered forty tokens for her, but I told him the tail number is in the logbook and the logbook is yours. We patched the left wing with a sheet of old advertising hoarding, and the paint on the fuselage has faded to pink. Fuel is the problem. There is enough in the drum for one hop, perhaps two, if I keep the throttle low over the water and stop pretending I am in a hurry.
I know what you will say. You will say the sky is not somewhere you go and come back from, and I will argue, as I always did, that the whole point of a map is to be wrong about where you have been. Still, I have chosen the route. Shannon, then west until the thread runs out at the old coast of Newfoundland, then over the grey stretch the globe has never been big enough to show.
If I do not come down, the thread will tell you where to look. I have turned the globe so the red line faces the door. Do not wind it. Let it stop where it stops.
