WARR;OR lettering design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word WARR;OR set in thin, even black monoline capitals, with a semicolon sitting where the letter I would be. The strokes are uniform and unshaded, with no colour. The text is centred on a plain white background with generous space around it.

The ledger says the mistake was made on a Tuesday in the third week of the thaw, when Ada Wroe set the banner for the Keld Harbour relief fund and her thumb slipped on the case. Nobody noticed until the presses ran. By then four hundred sheets were stacked in the hall, and the harbour master had already nailed one to the sea wall.

I was the only one who read it twice. WARR;OR. It looked like a sentence that had been told to wait. Ada wept when I showed her, then laughed, then asked whether we should pulp the lot. I said no. A semicolon is a pause that refuses to be a full stop, my father taught me, and a town that has been through a flood and a fever does not need a full stop on its own name.
So we left it. The sheets went out to the outer farms and up the valley road, and people pinned them in barns and kitchens. Old Mrs Parr kept one in her window through the whole of that winter. When the spring boats came back, the men who had gone south for work stopped at the wall, read the word, and went on reading as if the line had not finished.
Ada still has the first proof. She keeps it under glass on the counter by the till, and whenever a stranger asks why it is wrong, she tells them it isn't.
