Nell Ostler found the fox halfway up the old codlin tree, its forelegs hooked over a bough as though it had climbed there to see the weather. It was the last week of August and the grass beneath was sour with windfalls. Her father had set a snare in the wall gap three nights running and caught nothing but wasps and a hedgehog he would not let her keep.

The fox turned its head to the left and looked at her, unhurried, its black-tipped ears flat to its skull. Her grandmother had always said a fox in the orchard meant a wedding by Michaelmas, or a theft, depending on who was telling it. Nell held out a bruised Blenheim she had been saving for the cider press. The fox considered the apple, then the girl, and climbed down the trunk with its brush trailing like a dropped rope.
It did not take the apple. It walked to the wall gap, sat, and waited while she followed. In the nettles she found the wire, bitten through neatly at the peg. Her father had not done it. He had been sleeping in the cart at the bottom field since midsummer with a lamp, he said, to keep the badgers off the spuds.
She coiled the wire on the wall-top and set the apple on it. By morning the apple was gone, and in its place lay a single hair, rust-red and bright as a struck match, pressed into the lichen where anyone might find it. Nell kept it in an envelope under her grandmother's recipe book. Her father never asked what had become of the snare, and Nell never said.
