Orange kitten tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style orange kitten with large round eyes and a white muzzle sits facing forward, with its tail curling round below it. The linework is soft and the shading is gentle, with pale highlights in the eyes and fur. The orange and white ink sit against the pale skin of a forearm, with a blurred blue background behind.

Mrs Okonedo's lift had been broken since March, so the kitten arrived on the eleventh floor the way everything did in Harcourt House, by the stairwell, one step at a time. Nobody had seen where it came from. Lorraine on the fourth floor swore it had been sitting on the bin store roof like a hot water bottle someone had left out in the rain, all orange fluff and eyes big enough to fit a saucer in.

Dev from flat 9 said it was a fox in disguise. Dev said a lot of things, mostly on the walkway at seven in the morning with a mug of tea going cold on the railing. But the kitten went wherever it liked. It found the warm patch behind the boiler cupboard, it got into the laundry basket on the fifth floor, and on Thursdays it sat on the windowsill of the community room, watching the car park like a small furry landlord who had already decided about the rent.
Nobody wanted to claim it, which meant everybody fed it. By October there was a shoebox on the landing with a jumper in it, a tin of John West on a saucer by the bins, and a laminated sign in Lorraine's handwriting that read PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE CAT. Then the council sent a letter about the lift, and that same week the kitten started following Mrs Okonedo down the stairs each morning to the bus stop, tail curled like a question mark, waiting at the bottom until she came back up at night.
On the morning the lift was finally mended, the kitten took it up on its own. The doors opened on the eleventh floor and there it was, already sitting on the mat, tail wrapped round its feet, looking as though it had been waiting for the rest of them to catch up.
