Watercolour-style cat and flower on forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The image pairs a watercolour painting of a cat's head with a purple flower on paper with a photograph of the same design tattooed on a forearm. The tattoo uses soft blue, violet and pink tones with blended, painterly shading and defined eyes, ears and stripes. The arm sits against a dark top and denim jeans, with the design placed near the centre of the frame.

Now my grandmother swore the blue kitten came out of the paper on a wet Tuesday, and she was not a woman who told tales before dinner. Hanna Vosk had been painting in the hut at the forest's edge, the one with the crooked chimney, and she had flooded the sheet with too much water. The colours ran. A cat's head bled out of the wash, violet at the ears, cornflower across the cheeks, and she only said, 'Well, you'll want a saucer of milk,' which is what people say to anything that arrives uninvited.

The kitten followed the stream past the mill and sat beneath the foxgloves, refusing every doorstep in the village. Its stripes were the grey-blue of rain on a window, and its pink nose was the only warm thing about it. Each morning it dragged a purple bloom to the hut and laid it at Hanna's boots, and each morning the bloom was a little more faded, as if it had been picked from a page somebody had forgotten to finish.

Tomas, the miller's boy, wanted to keep it. He carried it home inside his coat when the frost came, and by Candlemas the kitten had stopped eating and would only stare at the wall. Hanna understood then. She walked it back to the hut, opened the sheet, and painted the petals in full, violet deepening to plum at the centre, until the paper was dry and the flower was whole.

In April the kitten padded back into the trees without looking round. The painting still hangs in the hut, and one corner is marked with a small blue paw print that has never quite dried.
