Watercolour world map on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A photograph of a world map tattoo on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade, with a dark top visible along the bottom edge. The continents are filled with soft, blended washes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, with ragged edges that suggest watercolour paint. The map sits slightly off centre against plain, lightly lit skin.

Dear Oona, the paint has finally come up from the depot, and the box is the colour of wet slate, which Mr Haddow says is the only honest colour a paint box can be. I have been set to the back room of the Chancery to colour the new map of the Realm of Ysmer, which was drawn in ink last spring by a clerk who had never once seen the sea.

Forgive the smudges. Every continent must be washed in by hand, one wet layer at a time, and the king's order is that no two lands may share a shade. I have given the southern reach a rust orange, the way the cliffs look at dusk from the ferry, and the eastern marshes a green so cold it nearly bites. The mountains came out purple by accident when I rinsed the brush in the wrong jar. Mr Haddow wanted them scraped, but I left them. Ink can hold a border, but paint lets the water go where it likes, and the edges are ragged where the wash ran on.

Yesterday the king's surveyor came to check the work and stood over the table a long while. He asked which country was yellow. I told him none, that it was only where the lamplight had pooled on the paper. He laughed and said it was the first honest answer he had heard in the Chancery in eleven years. Then he carried the sheet off to be framed for the hall, where the old ink map still hangs above the stairs.

I will send my wages home at quarter day. Tell Father the blues have stayed bright.
