Two bare feet are shown, each with a world map tattoo on the ankle. The left map shows the Americas and the right shows Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, with soft, blended edges. Before the bells, Mother Hanne had the ovens lit and the dough already turning under her palms, because the sea fog came in at four and the whole valley would want bread by six. Her son Piet came in stamping frost from his boots and asked why she was kneading two bowls instead of one.

She told him the old story as she worked. Long ago the world was one loaf, risen and warm, and the people tore it apart to share it out. The west took the piece with mountains like rolled pastry and a tail of land that hung down like a dropped apron string. The east took the piece with rivers as wide as lanes and a great warm hump of sand. Each tore a little more than fair, so the edges went ragged and blue water crept in between. Her grandmother said the crumbs that fell were the islands, and you could still taste the difference if you licked a finger on the sea wall at dusk.
Piet pointed at the two loaves cooling on the rack, one flecked with red and yellow, one with green and a smear of pink. She said the trick was not to make them match but to let the colours run into each other while they proved, so the seam would not show when the bread was cut. Then she pressed her thumbs into both, and the dough kept a faint print of the coastlines.
At first light she carried the loaves down to the harbour wall and set them side by side, one facing west, one facing east. The gulls came down and tore at the edges until the shapes softened into nothing but crust and warmth. By the time the boats came in, the bread had split itself neatly along the water, and nobody could say which half had been given away.
