World map tattoo across both feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet are shown, each carrying a world map with black outlined continents left unfilled against the skin. The surrounding areas are coloured with soft, blended washes of red, orange, green, blue and yellow that bleed beyond the outlines. The photograph is taken close up against a dark, glossy surface, which makes the colours stand out.

Sit closer, and mind the brazier, because this is a tale about ink and it does not like to be spilled. My grandmother's grandmother knew a mapmaker called Theron who worked in a back room near the lighthouse at Alexandria. He had never been further than Rhodes, yet he drew the whole world in lamp black on pale calfskin, and he left the seas blank because he said water had no edges worth keeping.

One winter a girl came to him with a commission nobody else would take. Her father had sailed west and not come back, and she wanted the coast he had gone to drawn so exactly that she could walk it in her mind. Theron refused her for three days. On the fourth he gave in, but only on condition that she carried the colours. She was to wet her hands in the pots of ochre, madder, woad and saffron and press them to the vellum wherever the land ended and the sea began, so the lines would bleed a little, the way a real coast does when the tide is in.
The map was finished before the spring rains. It hung on a nail above the door, and everyone who came in admired the blurred edges, the reds spreading into the blue of the Inner Sea. Then the rains came, the damp got under the calfskin, and the colours ran out past the black lines into the room. By morning the floorboards were a sea of their own.
She never found her father, and Theron never drew another coast in ink. But the girl sold the map for her passage money, and the buyer hung it in a far harbour. Sailors still say that if you stand on the wet stones and look down, you can see where the continents hold their shape while the colours wander off to find the water.
