World map tattoos on both soles

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown soles up, each carrying a black outline world map in thin, even linework. The continents are drawn as simple outlines with no shading, and the left sole shows the Americas while the right shows Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. The skin tone is natural, with a small red mark near the Asian landmass on the right foot, and a chair and table sit in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tattooist had charged Ruth double for the soles, because nobody else had ever asked for them, and she had paid without argument, which her daughter still brings up at Christmas. Three weeks before the wedding she sat on the edge of the bath with a hand mirror and a cup of tea gone cold, checking that the Atlantic was still where she had left it. Her granddaughter Sol was marrying a man from Recife on the shingle at Birling Gap, and Ruth had announced that the whole family would walk down to the water barefoot, so that everyone could see the world she had drawn for them.

Tobias arrived from Leeds with a rolled-up chart under his arm and a face like a builder who had found a crack in the foundations. He said the Pacific was wrong, that the coastline of South America had been slightly stretched, that the scale was impossible to keep at that size. Ruth told him the Pacific had never been wrong, only unfinished, and that she had been walking on it for forty years without anyone complaining. He sulked for an hour and then borrowed her reading glasses to look for himself, which she counted as a win.

By the time the fiddler started, the sand had worked its way into every line on the left foot, and the Americas looked like they had been rained on. Sol came across the beach in her bare feet, laughing, and sat down beside her grandmother without asking. She turned Ruth's foot over in her lap, traced the thin black coast of Africa with one finger, and asked where Japan had gone. Ruth pointed to the small red mark on the right sole. "Next to the stamp I got in 1961," she said. "That's where I've been, and where you're going." Sol looked at the water, then at the ring on her hand, and did not say anything, which for Sol was the same as a yes.
