Forest scene in a circle on a wrist

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows a woodland scene with tall trees and silhouetted animals standing on a ground area filled with fine stippled dots. The contrast comes from solid black tree trunks, pale negative space and dense dot shading at the base of the circle. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with a hand holding the arm against a dark leather background.

The last train before the snow ran through Hollin Halt at twenty past four, and by then the wood had already swallowed the light. Mr Ostler, who had kept the crossing gate for thirty years, told me the deer came down to the cutting when the frost set in, and that a porter should never raise a lamp at them. I thought he was being fanciful until the Tuesday I was left alone with the bell and the ledger.

They came out of the trees in single file, three does and a stag whose antlers caught the last of the sky. They stopped on the cinders by the down line, their breath hanging like thread, and stood while the signal arm creaked above them. I counted them twice. Nothing in the timetable had a place for animals, so I wrote nothing down. I only stood with my hand on the lever and waited, as Ostler had told me to.

The 4.20 came round the bend with its lamps blazing and slowed without any bell from me. The driver must have seen them from the cab, because the brakes sighed long before the platform. When the carriages stood still, the stag lifted its head towards the glass, looked at each window in turn as though checking names, then walked back into the dark with the does behind him.

Ostler was waiting at the gate on Thursday with his tea going cold. I told him what I had seen. He nodded, pulled the ledger across, and wrote in the margin for that date: Stag crossed. Line clear. Then he turned to the next page as if the matter was settled, and the lamp on the platform made a small pale ring on the frost, exactly the shape of the wood.
