The ground at Harrowgate was still soft from the rain when we pulled the Waltzer in, and I'm writing this on the back of a ride ticket because the caravan table has been folded up since Tuesday. You'll want to know about the cherry tree. Mr Pell says the orchard behind the church at Leyburn was half in blossom when we passed it, so I walked the verge with a penknife and took a sprig, pink on the thin green stems, with buds still shut tight as if nobody had told them it was spring.

I put it in a jam jar on the generator box where the light from the Dodgems comes through. By the second night the petals had opened and the leaves had dark edges, and Lou from the hook-a-duck stall said it looked like something painted on a teacup. I told him it looked as if it was trying to get somewhere. He laughed, though I wasn't joking.

On Friday the lorry slid into the ditch on the lane outside Ripon and the jar went under the bench with the spare bulbs. Half the ghost train was smashed. I found the sprig afterwards, bent but whole, and I've pressed it between two pages of the Wakefield programme so it keeps its curve. You'll have it when I'm home.
