Nell had been up since four, knotting the last of the mackerel net on the quay at Porthcarrow while the boats came in grey and low over the bar. Her father's pony, Morwen, stood at the top of the slip with the wicker creel-frame strapped to her back, ears turned towards the harbour wall, waiting the way she always waited, as though the sea owed her an apology.

The fleet had been short-handed since the Tressider boys went to Newlyn for work. Her father had made the pony a harness of tarred rope and taught her to walk the path down to the cove where the pots were stacked above the tideline. Morwen knew the route better than any of them. She would take the weight without being asked, step down the shingle, and wait for Nell to unhook the catch.

That morning the tide was on the turn and the pony would not go down. She stood at the head of the slip, forefoot lifted, and blew hard through her nose until Nell crouched and looked where she was looking. Out past the breakwater a single dinghy was drifting with its oars trailing, and no one in it.

Nell ran for the lifeboat rope with her father's whistle between her teeth. Morwen walked beside her, unhurried, keeping the line taut as they hauled. When they pulled the boy from the shallows he was blue and swearing, and the pony stood on the wet sand behind them, her hoofprints filling slowly with seawater until the whole path to the cove shone pale in the morning light.
