Sit down, you're blocking the lamp. There, that's better. Now the cat on the north wall, the grey one with the torn ear. Everybody in Porthcarrow knew her, though nobody owned her. She sat on the bollard by the fish market and watched the boats in, and she counted them, and if one was short she'd yowl until the widows came down the steps.

One February the Mary Ellen went out in a wind that flattened the gulls and never came back. Old Tobias Rudd said the cat had miscounted for once, but she didn't stop yowling. Night after night she sat on the wall with her tail curled round her feet, and the women brought her herring and she wouldn't touch it.

Then, on the third night, a star dropped out of the black, low over the breakwater, and it didn't fall into the sea. It hung beside the tip of her tail, small and steady as a lamp left burning. Tobias swore he saw a ring of pale light settle over her ears, and two wings unfold from her shoulders, wet and grey. She rose off that stone like smoke and went out past the light.

The Mary Ellen came in at dawn with her mast snapped and her crew bailing, and every man aboard swore a cat had walked the rail ahead of them, calling the depths in the dark. Go down to the fish market and you'll see the bollard, still scratched where she sharpened her claws. And if you're out late, mind the little star on the stone. It's only the lamp, they'll tell you. It's only the lamp.
