Nobody aboard the Marigold Rose could say who had first fed the white cat, only that she had come aboard at Valparaiso with a red ribbon knotted at one ear and the look of someone who had paid her passage in full. The second mate called her Madam. The cook called her a thief. Old Tobin, who had rounded the Horn three times and lost two fingers to a winch, called her nothing at all, because he said you never named a thing that could leave you.

By the fortieth day out of Cape Town the glass had dropped so far that the men stopped joking about it. The sea came green over the rail and the hatch battens groaned. Madam would not go below. She sat on the wheelhouse step with her paws tucked under her, clutching the small pink sweet tin the purser had given her as a joke at the Plate, pressed against her chest as though it were the only warm thing left in the world.

When the mainsail split, it was the cat who moved first, not up the rigging but along the lee rail where Tobin was crawling on his hands, half blind with brine. She yowled once, sharp as a ship's bell, and he turned his head toward the sound and got a grip on the stanchion just as the deck fell away beneath him. The gale took the tin that night. Nobody saw it go.

In the grey morning Tobin found the ribbon snagged on a cleat, red as a fresh cut, and tied it round his wrist. Madam slept in the sun on the hatch as though she had never been anywhere else. The second mate, who had stopped calling her Madam somewhere off the Horn, called her Kit now and fed her from his own plate.
