Wolf and raven sleeve design

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A black and grey drawing of a full sleeve design with a howling wolf at the top and a second wolf with blue eyes below it. A raven perches on a rock beside the wolf, with a mountain range, a pale moon and a flock of birds in the sky behind them. Soft shading builds the clouds and fur, while bold tribal swirls and a wing fill the lower half.

The wolves of Harrowmere had not howled at the moon in forty winters, not since the old king bought the pale stone for his daughter's tower and the moon, they said, went quiet to spite him. I was the only raven who had ever sat on that tower long enough to hear the difference. My name is Corrin, and I was then the king's messenger, which meant I flew where wolves could not.

The grey wolf with the blue eyes came to me at dusk, below the scree where the clouds sat low. Her name was Ysolde, though she only answered to it when snow was falling. 'The moon is in the well,' she said. 'The king's men lowered it on a rope and a bell.' I did not believe her until I flew down to the water and saw the disc of it trembling under a skin of ice, while above us a flock of starlings wheeled and scattered like thrown ash.

We went to the tower together, which no wolf and raven had done before. The howl came from Ysolde's cousin at the top of the slope, a long grey note that climbed the peaks one by one until the rope groaned and the bell rang loose. I think the king heard it in his sleep. By morning the moon hung over the Grey Teeth again, pocked and proud, and the king's men went searching for the thieves who had stolen it.

No one ever found us. I still carry that night in my feathers, and when the sky over the mountains goes silver I fly the long way round the tower just to see the moon is where we left it. Ysolde no longer answers to her name. She answers only to the wind, and the wind, I have learned, carries a secret further than any bird.
