Traditional style tattoo of a cartoon boy with a scowling face inside a red scalloped heart with banners, on the upper thigh.

Cartoon character in heart banner on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A bald cartoon boy with a scowling, open-mouthed expression is centred inside a red heart-shaped frame with a scalloped edge and yellow drops. Two grey banners with lettering cross the top and bottom of the heart. Bold black outlines, flat fills and red shading give it a classic traditional look, photographed on a thigh against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have guarded the gatehouse of Ravensmoor Keep for eleven minutes when the woman in the orange cagoule comes up the hill with a flask in one hand and a handbag swinging from the other. You know, the way you know a bad smell, that she means to slip past you without paying the four pounds.

She tries the sideways shuffle, then the smile, then the story about her nephew who is somewhere inside with the map. You tell her the ticket hut has been shut since October and the postern is chained, and she says that's quite all right, she'll go round the back. Then the handbag is gone. It isn't stolen so much as lifted by a gust that smells of vinegar and turns out to be a jackdaw the size of a loaf. It lands on the broken parapet with the clasp glinting in its beak, and it looks at you with an expression of enormous self-satisfaction.

You are already running. You take the spiral stair two steps at a time, shouting "That's my purse!" at a bird that has no interest in your claims, and by the time you reach the top the jackdaw has dropped the bag into the moat, where it floats, bobbing, next to a traffic cone someone threw in during the Coronation. The woman arrives at the bottom of the tower, puffing, and points at you. "You there. Have you seen a man with a handbag? I don't know you, but I'd like my things back." You look down at the moat, then at the bird, and realise you have no idea how to explain yourself to her.
