A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marguerite, the bus from Barstow left me at the Dunmore crossroads at half past four, which is the wrong time for anyone to be standing beside a petrol pump with a suitcase and no plan. The man who runs the pump wouldn't let me sit inside, so I sat on the kerb and read the same billboard about cold lager until the sun went down behind it. I'm writing this on the back of the timetable because it's the only paper I have.

You always said I'd never go anywhere without a map and a reason. I've got neither, only the word you told me to keep in mind, the one you wrote on the inside of my wrist when we were nineteen and too proud to say anything plainly. I haven't got it there now. I had it done properly last spring, in a back room in Leeds, the letters running up behind my ear where only I'd catch them when I turned to listen for trouble. The artist said the small capitals would blur in the sun, so I should never let anyone talk me into a smaller size.

A lorry driver stopped at dusk, a big soft man with a Bible on the dashboard, and asked where I was headed. I said east, and he laughed and said that was the only direction nobody gave a reason for. He dropped me at a motel where the sign was missing its O, so it just says MTEL in red, and I've decided that's a sort of omen. Tomorrow I'll ring the number you left on the fridge and let it ring out, the way I always do, and then I'll walk on.

If you find this, I'm not asking you to come after me. I'm telling you the road is long and I've started to like it.
