World map outline on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a world map sits on the inside of a wrist, showing the continents and several islands with no shading. The ink is solid black and the lines are thin and even. The hand is raised at the top right, and the background shows grey trousers and black shoes on a pale grey floor.

Your uncle's print shop on Mill Lane smells of linseed and wet newsprint, and on Thursdays the Hartley boy brings the post in a canvas bag. This Thursday there is a letter with a Singapore stamp, and you read it standing at the counter while the press thuds behind the back door. Ned has not written since the spring. It runs to three lines: he is well, the food is strange, and the sea there is the wrong colour.

You fold it into your apron pocket and go out to the yard where the scrap paper is stacked. Ned used to draw maps on everything, on tablecloths, on the backs of cereal packets, shading the oceans in pencil until the paper went furry. You take a stub of pencil and sketch the shapes you remember: the hook of Africa, the hunched back of South America, the scatter of islands he always forgot to finish. Your hand is unsteady, or perhaps the paper is.
Your uncle comes out with his tea and looks over your shoulder. "That's not Calder Vale," he says. "No," you say. "It's where he is, more or less." He takes the pencil from behind your ear and corrects the Atlantic, pressing so hard the point snaps. "Keep the lines thin," he mutters, "or the sea floods the land." You laugh for the first time all week.
That evening you copy the whole thing again, very fine, onto a sheet you pin above your bed. When the light goes you can still feel every coast under your fingers, as if you had walked them. The letter goes in the drawer. The map stays up, and you lie awake working out which way Ned will come home.
