World map tattoo on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black world map, showing the continents with simplified outlines, sits on the upper back between the shoulder blades. The shapes are filled in with flat black ink, with no shading or fine detail inside the landmasses. The skin is pale and the background is a plain light wall, so the black ink is the strongest element in the frame.

The order came from a shipping office in Liverpool: a world chart, a thousand sheets, every continent printed solid. No rivers, no mountain ranges, no names of towns. The clerk had written in the margin that the captains found the detail confusing. Nell thought it was the stupidest order she had ever been given, and she said so, and Asquith only laughed and handed her the roller.

The ink went on thick and black. Each sheet came off the press with the land standing up like coal in a bucket of milky sea, and by the third week her forearms were stained to the elbow. One evening she found her father's old atlas open on the bench, its pages soft with handling, and realised she could no longer find the Horn without the lines to guide her. She had not read a place name in months. She had only been printing shapes.

On the last day she pinned one sheet in the shop window, where the afternoon sun came through the glass and turned the ink to brown. A woman stopped, traced the black coast of South America with a gloved finger, and asked where it was. Nell told her to guess. The woman laughed, said somewhere warm, and walked on.
