Matching XO tattoos on two wrists

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown close together, each with a small XO tattoo in solid black ink. The letters are simple and evenly spaced, with clean linework and no shading. The warm, soft-focus background of skin and a patterned fabric sits behind the arms, keeping the tattoos as the clear focus.

The postcards had been arriving at the flat in Hull for three weeks, each one with a gull on the front and the same two letters on the back. Nell had never signed anything without XO in her life, not even the note about the boiler. Ivy kept them in a biscuit tin under the sink, because the tin was the only dry thing in the flat.

The parlour above the chip shop on Anlaby Road had been Nell's idea. The night before she caught the coach south, the two of them sat on the bathroom floor with a cheap lamp and a tube of Savlon, and a man with a sailor's forearms pressed the letters onto the insides of their wrists, small and square. "So we always know where the other one is," Nell had said, and Ivy had laughed, because it sounded like something from a film.

The last card came on a Tuesday with no gull at all, only a photograph of Whitby pier and the letters pressed so hard the biro had torn the paper. Ivy took the next train north with her coat half buttoned and walked the length of the harbour wall, past the fish stalls and the crowds of children with ice creams, until she found a bench where a woman sat with her back to the sea. Nell turned round and lifted her wrist without a word. The ink had gone soft at the edges, the same as Ivy's own. They held their arms side by side above the railing, two pairs of letters pressed together, while the gulls shouted over the water.
