Snarling tabby cat with blue sunburst
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A grey tabby cat sits upright with its head raised and mouth wide open, showing its teeth in a snarl. The cat is shaded in greys and browns with fine, detailed fur texture, and a bold blue sunburst of tapering rays radiates behind it. The composition is centred on the cat, with the rays filling the space around its outline.

Dear Marion,

The rain has been coming sideways down Hallam Street since eight, so forgive the smudged ink. Bramble has taken against my new sign. You will remember the one I painted for the Saturday trade, a blue sunburst with a dozen tapering rays fanned out behind the words Good Clean Second Hand. I thought it would bring in the early crowd. Instead she sat square in front of it on Thursday, ears flat, and glared at it for an hour as if it owed her money.
Then yesterday a man in a yellow cagoule stopped to haggle over a tin of mismatched buttons, and Bramble rose up off the crate and let out the most dreadful yowl, teeth and all. He dropped the tin. The buttons went rolling under Mr Okafor's teapots, and the whole row of us spent ten minutes on our hands and knees in the wet.
I was cross with her until I saw what she was doing. Every time the rain thickened and the rays blurred under the drips, she stopped snarling and went very still, watching the blue grow dim. This morning she sat up straight in the downpour, mouth wide, and yawned at the sign as if to say, there, you see, it's only paint. Then she came and curled up on my good coat in the van.
I have not had the heart to move the sign. Come up on the train when the weather turns, and bring the good kettle.
Love, Ruth
