The image shows the words you, can, do and this written in handwritten cursive script, each on its own line with a long underline beneath it. The linework is thin and even, in black ink on a plain white background. The four lines are stacked with generous spacing and sit centred in the frame.

On it, in her looping pencil, were four lines, each with a long stroke beneath it, as though she had been underlining a promise. You can. Do this. I had forgotten it existed. I was eleven, standing at the top of the high board at the baths on Hallam Road, chlorine stinging my eyes, Mr Pryce calling my name while the whole year watched. She must have written it the night before the gala, and I had found it in my blazer pocket that same week and never mentioned it to anyone.
I asked her whether she remembered writing it. She shrugged and said she wrote something similar on the back of most of her children's homework, that half of them had gone on to swim and the other half had jumped anyway. Then she tapped the bottom line with a fingernail. "Always go past the end of the stroke," she said. "That's where the rest of the sentence lives."
I drove home with the card on the passenger seat. At the first set of lights I took out my phone, typed the four words to my daughter, and after a moment added a row of underscores beneath them. I sent it before I could change my mind.
