Zebras with heart balloons tattoo design sheet
Mixed · Flash
The sheet shows four zebras in black ink with white stripes, each floating upward on a bunch of red heart-shaped balloons tied with a small red bow. One large zebra and three smaller repeats are arranged across the page, with a heart bunch reading LOVE above the main design and a red script line reading Your Name Here at the bottom. The drawing uses clean, bold outlines with solid black and red fills on a plain white background.

The zebra came over Skerrin harbour at half past six on a grey February morning, low enough that the gulls scattered like dropped change. It was towing a bunch of red heart balloons the size of cabbages, each knotted with a bow that had come slightly undone. I was on the post office step with the broom, and Mrs Dunlop from the bakery was shouting that it had escaped from a Valentine's display in Oban, which was a lie, because nobody in Oban would own a zebra.

It came down slowly, hooves cycling at the air, and landed on the harbour wall with a sound like a dropped piano. Around its neck hung a canvas pouch. Inside was one envelope, damp at the corners, addressed in careful capitals to THE PERSON ON THE ISLAND WHO STILL WRITES LETTERS. I am, I suppose, the only one. The zebra stamped and tossed its head and kept nudging the pouch toward me with its striped nose until I took it.
The letter was short. The sender had watched the ferry come in for forty years, it said, and had never once been asked to get off it. Would I please write my own name on the blank card tied to the balloons, so the bunch would know where it belonged. There was no signature, only a red bow drawn in the corner, slightly lopsided.
I fetched the red ink from the counter drawer, which I have never used for anything but overdue notices. The zebra watched me write, ears forward, patient as a clerk. When I tied the card on, the heart bunch lifted, took up the zebra like a kite, and went off over the cliffs toward the mainland, one balloon bobbing back at me like a wave. I still have the broom. I still do not know who wrote the letter.
