Airplane, bars and arrow on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with three small black tattoo marks on the side of one finger: an airplane outline, two vertical bars and an upward arrow. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading. A textured gold ring sits above the tattoo, and the background shows hair and a pearl necklace.

The rain had got into the cardboard boxes again, so I was drying Penguin paperbacks one by one on the awning rope when Dot shouted from the veg stall that the Manchester plane was late. I didn't need telling. I'd been watching the sky over the market roofs since seven, the way you watch a kettle.

My brother Terry had a rule about planes. He said one that climbed straight out of the grey was going somewhere it meant to stay, and one that stayed low was only being polite. So I kept a tally on the back of my price tags: two bars for every plane that crossed low over the stall, and an arrow when one lifted clean. Forty-one bars by March. Terry never once looked up to check my figures.
Then the arrow came on a Saturday, with the sun out for the first time in weeks, and I was so surprised I dropped a box of Agatha Christies into a puddle. He'd rung from Lisbon on the Tuesday and said he was coming home for good, and I'd half refused to believe him until I heard the engines.
By two o'clock he was at the gate with a holdall and a sunburnt neck, looking up at the roofs as if he were counting too. I pulled the tag out of my pocket, the one with the arrow still wet on it, and held it up. He read it, laughed, and the rain started again on both of us.
