All-seeing eye in a triangle on a neck
Realism · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A large eye with a green iris sits inside a gold-edged triangle across the front of the neck, with lashes drawn along the lids. The eye is shaded with smooth gradients and highlights, giving a realistic finish, while the surrounding skin carries dark, textured shading. Grey scrollwork and swirling ornament extend over the neck and upper chest, with the green, pink and gold of the eye standing out against the black and grey areas.

The Chancellor of Ostrevine kept an eye in every room of the palace, though none of them were truly his. They were glass, ground in the lens-houses below the Saltmarket and set in gilt triangles above the doorways, so that the court would always feel the weight of looking. I was the grinder who shaped them. My master taught me to lay the green in thin rings so the iris seemed wet, and to leave the lashes dark as soot, because a watched man believes an eye that blinks.

For eleven years I made eyes and asked no questions. Then a woman came to the lens-house at dusk with a sealed tin of pigment and a request. She wanted one more eye, a true one, with a pupil that would follow a person across a room. She paid in silver and in a promise that the Chancellor would never learn whose hand had made it. I told her the work could not be done, and she smiled as though I had already agreed.
She was right to smile. The pigment in the tin was the exact green of the first iris I ever ground, the one my master threw in the furnace for being too alive. I had kept a sliver of that first failure in my apron pocket for eleven years, and I took it out now and held it beside hers. They matched. Somewhere above us, in the palace, a door I had hung myself creaked open.
I set the green disc into its gold ring before dawn. When I lifted the lamp to test it, the pupil drew tight and followed the flame, and across the Saltmarket a shutter banged open, then shut, as if someone had only just looked away.
