Angel wings tattoo across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person seen from behind shows a pair of angel wings tattooed across the upper back, with feathers rendered in soft grey shading and darker tonal detail. The wings spread outward from the shoulder blades, and the head is turned away so no face is visible. A laptop, a glass and a wooden counter sit in the softly lit background.

Mum always said you could tell a good feather from a bad one by the light, and by the time the Harvest Fair reached Wrexham I had learned to hold a pigeon quill up to the sun and see whether it would hold. Most didn't. The lot I'd bought off a poulterer in Chester had gone the colour of wet slate, and Dilys, who ran the coconut shy beside us, swore they smelt of the hutch.

Still, I wasn't throwing them. I had a commission. The organ on the gallopers had lost its painted angel years back, a plaster thing with a chipped nose that sat above the mirror panel, and the showman wanted it restored before the bank holiday crowds. He paid in cash and didn't ask questions, which suited me. So I soaked the quills in weak tea and ash, worked each one with a bone scraper, and laid them in rows on the trestle until the whole set shaded from charcoal at the tips to pale smoke at the root.

On the last night a girl came round the back of the fairground with a torch, looking for the toilets, and stopped at the trestle. She asked if the angel was for the horses. I said it was for whoever needed lifting. She nodded as if that were a fair price and walked off towards the lights.

When the wings were fixed I climbed the platform and wired them to the plaster shoulders, and the carousel turned slow in the dusk. The bulbs came up one by one. Under them the feathers caught the glow and looked, for a moment, like something that had only just landed.
