A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had the lamp room to herself for the first time in eleven years, and she still climbed the iron stairs as though someone was counting. The brass was cold. Her father had polished it every morning until his hands gave out, and now the job fell to her, along with the logbook, the fog bell and the gull that roosted on the gallery rail and would not be shifted.

On the night the storm came in from the west, the sky above the headland split open in a way she had never seen. A round sun hung inside the cloud, red at its rim, and beneath it a girl in a crimson dress stood on the water with her eyes shut and her arms lifted, as if she were holding something invisible. Mags rubbed her eyes. The girl did not move. The waves ran white around her feet and did not touch her.

Mags thought of the old tale her father told about the lamp, that it did not shine for ships at all but for whoever stood in the dark and needed to be seen. She had always called it nonsense. She climbed to the gallery anyway, lit the wick with trembling matches, and turned the great lens until the beam swept across the water and crossed the girl's face.

The girl opened her eyes and smiled, then folded her hands over her heart and bowed. The moon slid out from behind the cloud, thin as a fingernail, and the storm drew back like a tide. When the fog bell rang at dawn, Mags found the gull gone and a small red feather lying on the brass, bright as a coin.
